Background

Every year June 26 is observed as International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. This day is observed to express the solidarity with, and support for, the victims of torture and their family members throughout the world. On 12 December 1997, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 26 June the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. This day was first observed on 26 June 1998.

The day June 26 is important because of two reasons, first, on 26 June 1945, the United Nations Charter was signed during the midst of World War II – the first international instrument obliging UN members to respect and promote human rights. Second, on 26 June 1987, the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment came into effect.

Actions and Programs

As a part of this observance many campaigns are conducted around the world. Some of the activities include: awareness programs related to the issues to human torture, social media campaign, materials and posters to spread the message, exhibitions, etc.
