Background

Every year June 20 is observed as World Refugee Day. This day is observed to raise awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world.

On 4 December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed to observe every year June 20 as World Refugee Day. The first World Refugee Day was observed on 20 June 2001.
