What is Environmental Science?

Environmental science is the branch of science dealing with the study of different components of environment, the factors influencing the changes in the environment and the interdependence of living things within their environment. It includes the study of physics, chemistry, biology, soil, geology, geography, social science, etc.

Roles and Responsibilities of an Environmental Professional

The work role of an environmental science professional depends on the area of work he / she is involved in. Some of the roles and responsibilities involve pollution control and mitigation, studying and controlling global climate change, natural and alternative energy sources, natural resource management, etc.

Educational Qualification Required

Basic educational qualification required to become an environmental professional is a degree in environmental science. But mostly a specialization for environmental science is not available commonly for degree courses. A master degree (MSc.) in environmental science is that which can obtain to become an environmental professional. Higher qualifications like a PhD in related field can provide a chance to become an environmental scientist.

Skills and Knowledge Required

An environmental professional must have a thorough passion, love and interest on environment, nature and related fields. He / she must be a person with flexibility, understanding ability, scientific aptitude, creative ability etc. An environmental professionals should also have different skills like communication skills, computer knowledge, interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, analytical skills, presentation skills, etc.

How to become an Environmental Professional?

To become an environmental professional, one has to opt for science stream in +2 or equivalent with PCB (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) as subjects. After +2 they can go for degree courses in environmental science or in science stream. Some of the courses available in environmental science are BSc. Environmental Science, Bachelor of Environmental Management (BEM), etc. Later they can opt for MSc. in Environmental Science and continue his / her studies by pursuing MPhil and PhD in environmental science or related fields.
