What is Electronics Engineering?

Electronic engineering involves the design and testing of electronic circuits that uses the properties of components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, and transistors to achieve a particular functionality.
Electronics engineering is a subfield of electrical engineering earlier known as radio engineering and from mid to late 1950’s it is known as electronic engineering.

Roles and Responsibilities of an Electronics Engineer

Role and responsibilities of electronics engineer is to design, manufacture and service of electronics designs for various uses. They have to design the electronic circuits as per the requirement of the field they are involved in. The work role is mostly a team work which involves development and design of electronic goods and services.

Educational Qualification Required

The basic requirement to become an electronic engineer is by obtaining a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering or electrical and electronic engineering (B.Tech or B.E.). Diploma courses are also available in electronic engineering.
There are many specializations and courses are available in the field of electronics engineering. These courses gives much improved opportunity for the job seeker in this field on specific industries and specialization.
One can go for master’s degree in electronics engineering and get a better job opportunity and also for opting a teaching profession. They can also go for research and P.hd. in this field and specialization.
For getting admission for engineering course a student has to get good score in entrance exams conducted by IITs or national level or state level entrance exams or exams conducted by various engineering colleges. The basic qualification required to write these entrance exams are 10+2 science or equivalent examination, with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) as the optional subject. A person can get admission into master’s degree (M. Tech) by getting good score in entrance examinations like GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). The basic qualification to attempt GATE is B Tech or BE.
The study of electronic engineering are connected with many other branches of engineering and other disciplines. Some of them are:
Biomedical engineering – concerned with the design of medical equipment.
Computer engineering – deals with the design of computers and computer system.
Control engineering – deals with designing of control systems for wide range of activities includes airplane, modern cars, etc.
Electric power control –
Instrumentation engineering – deals with the design of devices to measure physical quantities.
Mechatronics – deals with the convergence of electrical and mechanical systems.
Microelectronics engineering – deals with the design and microfabrication of very small electronic circuits.
Radio engineering –
Robotics –
Signal processing – deals with analysis and manipulation of signals.
Solid state physics –
Systems engineering –
Telecommunications – transmission of information across a channel.
VLSI design engineering – deals with fabrication of ICs and various electronics components.

Skills and Knowledge Required

An electronics engineer must have interest and knowledge in physics and mathematics. Precision skills, analytical skills, communication skills, problem solving skills, etc.

How to become an Electronics Engineer?

If anybody want to become an electronics engineer, he / she must choose PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) stream in 10+2 science and score good in Entrance exams conducted by IITs or in national or state level entrance exams or in entrance exams conducted by individual colleges for admission into engineering colleges.
Working people in the private and public sector, or diploma holders can acquire a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering by appearing for the Associate Membership examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE).

Where do I get the Job?

An electronics engineer can get job in government, semi government, private and public organizations. They can get jobs in many industries like telecommunication, aviation, consumer goods and appliances, automobile, entertainment transmission, research establishment, defense, etc. They can also get job in engineering colleges as teachers.
