Background

On December 12, 1996 UN General Assembly decided to observe November 16 as the international Day for Tolerance. This action came in the wake of the United Nations Year for Tolerance, 1995. This was done at the initiative of UNESCO. Aim of International Day for Tolerance is to educate people about the need for tolerance in society and to help them understand the negative effects of intolerance.

This day helps us to give education on tolerance as well as problems of intolerance. These days the observance is became important as the acts of intolerance, violence, terrorism, marginalization, discrimination, refugees, vulnerable groups and racism have increased widely.


Actions and Programs

This is a day to respect and recognize others rights and beliefs. Many observe this day with debates based on negative effects of intolerance, injustice, oppression, racism, discrimination etc. and its impact on society.

The theme of this day is spread through flyers, posters, news articles and broadcasts. Other activities includes in the day are essays, dialogues and story of people shows tolerance or intolerance and its impact on their life.

Intolerance can be controlled by right law, education, access to information, individual awareness, and solutions locally.
